The Birsty's, otherwise Birchensty's or Burster's, were lords of the Manor of Birchensty in Ardingly,Sussex, from a time of Remote antiquity. Thomas, fourth in descent from John Birchensty of Birchensty, was the first to use the surname in the contracted form of BIRSTY, and ws likewise the first to remove from the family home. He was a man-of-law and "serjeant" to the hapless Anne of Cleves, who was banished to Hever .

How Green, otherwise Hook Green, was held of the Manor of Chiddingstone Burghersh and belonged originally to John Hynes, afterwards to John Seyliard, then to Thomas Seyliard , and finally to Ewry Seyliard, who sold it to Thomas Birsty, who left it to his second son Thomas. The third son of "Thomas the Serjeant" was William Birsty of Chiddingstone , who was one of the principal inhabitants. He was buried in the nave of St Mary's Chiddingstone, where there is a brass to his memory inscribed :-
